If you have already given down payment and first month rent payment when should the landlord authorize the move in date?|||Yes, you may do a credit check...however...legally, you need written consent from the tenant, and it needs to be kept on file for 5 years. I'm not sure if you need written consent for a background check, though. Yes, it's fine to contact previous landlords. As far as the move in date, that should be specified on the lease ahead of time.|||They have a right to any information they can get about you. Wouldn't you want to do the same if you were the landlord?|||I would say that the landlord legally has the right to conduct a background or credit check as well as contact previous housing representatives to verify payment details prior to a new tenant moving into his or her apartment.

These days these methods are quite common in order for a landlord to figure out whether or not you have been responsible in paying your rent on time.

You may want to contact the landlord to inquire how soon you can move in since you have already submitted a down payment for the first month's rent.
