What are some ways of getting information on my great grandfathers history?
he served in world war 2 and i am trying to find information on what he did where he went during the war. i also want to try and see if he got any medals during the war. thank you.|||If your great grandfather was US Military:

Contact the National Personnel Records Center in St Louis Missouri

For Next-of-Kin (YOU), should reach this link:
http://www.archives.gov/veterans/evetrec鈥?/a>

Secondary Link:
http://www.archives.gov/st-louis/militar鈥?/a>

The following information is suggested:
I quote from their website:
"Requests must contain enough information to identify the record among the more than 70 million on file at NPRC (MPR). Certain basic information is needed to locate military service records. This information includes the veteran's complete name used while in service, service number, social security number, branch of service, and dates of service. Date and place of birth may also be helpful, especially if the service number is not known. If the request pertains to a record that may have been involved in the 1973 fire, also include place of discharge, last unit of assignment, and place of entry into the service, if known."|||Which country? The US, Britain, Canada?

Each has different archives.

But what I would reccoment is joining up with a genealogy site of some sort, like ancestry.com or ancestry.co.uk as they have lots of online records and forums where you can ask where to go.

WWII and WWI records are fairly easy to track down.
